Vacuum and compression bags have a reputation for being fiddly, and most of that reputation is earned by two fixable habits: a rushed seal and rolling in the wrong direction.
Done properly they are the single most effective way to reclaim volume from bulky soft goods. Done carelessly they slowly re-inflate over the course of a flight and you arrive with a bag that no longer closes.
The two types, and which you want
They are not interchangeable.
Valve bags use a one-way valve and are evacuated with a vacuum cleaner or a hand pump. They achieve the highest compression by a wide margin. They are the right choice at home, packing for departure, where a vacuum cleaner exists.
Roll-up bags have no valve and no pump. You seal them and force air out through a one-way vent by rolling. They compress less, but they work anywhere, which matters on the return leg in a hotel room. For travel, roll-up bags are usually the correct choice despite the lower compression, because a bag you cannot use on the way home solves only half the problem.
Sealing, which is where most failures start
Almost every bag that leaks was sealed badly rather than damaged.
Close the seal along its entire length before you begin removing air. Run a thumb and forefinger along it from one end to the other, pressing as you go, then do it a second time from the other direction. A single unsealed centimeter is enough to let a bag return to full volume over a few hours.
Check the seal channel for obstructions first. A single thread, a hair, or a stray fiber caught in the track will hold it open. This is the most common cause of a bag that seems to seal and then quietly fails.
Do not overfill. Every bag has a fill line, and it is not decorative. Past it the material bunches at the seal and cannot close cleanly.
Rolling technique
Roll from the closed end toward the valve, in one continuous motion, using your body weight rather than your hands. Kneeling on it works well.
One continuous roll matters because it pushes a single front of air ahead of it. Short repeated pushes let air redistribute into pockets behind the roll, and those pockets are what you are still fighting five minutes later.
Keep the bag flat and the contents evenly distributed before you start. A lump in the middle creates channels that trap air on either side of it.
What to compress and what to leave alone
Compression only converts trapped air into space, so it pays off in proportion to how much air an item holds.
Worth compressing: down and synthetic insulation, fleece, sweaters, sweatshirts, puffy jackets, towels, bedding. These are mostly air and can lose a large fraction of their volume.
Not worth compressing: jeans, t-shirts, most trousers. Dense woven fabric holds little air, so you gain almost nothing while turning a conformable pile into a rigid block that will not fit around the shape of your case. That rigidity can cost you more space than the compression saved.
Do not compress: tailored garments, anything you need uncreased, and structured items. Also avoid long-term compression of down. Down insulates by loft, and leaving it crushed for months damages its ability to recover. Compress for the journey, unpack on arrival.
The weight trap
This catches people out repeatedly and is worth stating plainly: compression removes volume, not weight.
It is entirely possible to compress your way into a bag that looks half empty and is over the airline limit. If you are anywhere near a weight allowance, weigh the bag before you compress, because afterwards the visual cue you normally rely on is gone.
Structured items need folding first
Vacuum compression flattens soft fabric well. It does nothing useful for shapes that do not want to lie flat.
A stiff jacket collar, a structured shoulder, or a shoe should be folded or positioned flat before it goes in. Otherwise the bag compresses around the shape and you get a hard, awkward object that is harder to pack than the loose item was.
Making them last
Store bags flat and unrolled, not folded into the seal, because a permanent crease across the seal channel is what eventually stops it closing.
Keep them away from sharp objects, obviously, but also from anything with a firm point, since the failure is usually a pinhole rather than a tear. A bag that will not hold vacuum with nothing visibly wrong almost always has one.
Wipe the seal occasionally. Grit in the channel wears it faster than use does.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Compression makes a bag denser, and a denser bag is harder to search.
Once your clothing is a set of sealed, rigid blocks, retrieving one item means breaking a seal and re-rolling it. That is fine for the layers you will not touch until you arrive. It is a genuine nuisance for anything you might need in transit.
So sort before you compress. Anything you could plausibly want during the journey stays loose and accessible: a change of top, medication, chargers, and the documents and cards you will need standing at a desk. A slim cardholder helps here for the same reason compression hurts, since it keeps ID and payment cards as one object you can reach for without opening anything that was sealed shut.
When not to bother
For a two-night trip in one climate, compression bags are usually more hassle than help. There is not enough bulky soft goods for them to work on.
