Ballistic nylon comes up in almost every conversation about durable carry gear, usually as shorthand for indestructible. It is a genuinely excellent material, but it is excellent at one specific thing, and buying it for the wrong reason leads to disappointment.
This is a plain look at what it does well, where it loses, and how it compares to the other materials used in everyday carry.
Where it came from
Ballistic nylon was developed during the Second World War as flak jacket material, intended to protect aircrews from shell fragments. It did not work especially well for that purpose and was eventually replaced by other materials for body armor.
What it turned out to be exceptional at was surviving abrasion. The basket weave that failed to stop fragments is extremely good at resisting the scuffing, dragging and rubbing that destroys ordinary fabric, which is why it moved into luggage and never left.
What the numbers mean
Ballistic nylon is usually quoted in denier, most commonly 1050D or 1680D. Denier measures the linear density of the yarn, so a higher number means thicker yarn and, broadly, a tougher and heavier fabric.
Two things are worth knowing. First, denier alone does not determine durability. Weave structure, yarn quality and coating matter as much, and a well-made 1050D fabric can outlast a poorly made 1680D one. Second, higher denier costs weight, and weight is the main reason people end up disliking an otherwise excellent bag.
What it is genuinely good at
Abrasion resistance. This is the headline and it is deserved. A bag base dragged across concrete, shoved under seats and loaded onto belts will show wear far more slowly than almost any alternative.
Tear resistance. The tight weave resists a puncture spreading into a rip.
Shape retention. It holds structure without a frame, which is why it suits bags that should not sag when half empty.
What it is not good at
Weight. It is heavy. On a large bag the fabric alone can account for a meaningful share of the empty weight, which matters against airline limits.
Water. Nylon absorbs water and ballistic nylon is not waterproof on its own. Any water resistance comes from a coating or laminate, and those wear off with use. A bag sold as weather resistant on the strength of the fabric name alone is being oversold.
UV. Prolonged sun exposure degrades nylon and fades the dye. Nothing unusual, but it is not immune.
Cost. It is more expensive than the polyester alternatives, and on items that will never see hard abrasion that money buys nothing.
How it compares
Cordura is a brand covering several nylon fabrics, typically lighter than ballistic at similar toughness and often better at hiding wear. Ballistic tends to hold a cleaner look until it suddenly does not; Cordura ages more gradually.
Ripstop uses a reinforcing grid to stop tears spreading and is dramatically lighter. It abrades faster. It is the right answer where weight dominates.
Waxed canvas looks better to many people and handles light rain, but it is heavier still and needs re-waxing.
Polyester is cheaper, lighter and more UV stable, and is genuinely fine for gear that lives indoors.
Why a cardholder is a different problem
Everything above concerns bags, where the enemy is abrasion across large panels. A cardholder faces an entirely different set of forces, and this is where fabric stops being the right answer.
The failure mode for a card carrier is not abrasion. It is dimensional change. A fabric or leather card pocket stretches under a full card load, and once stretched it does not return. The cards then sit loose, the thing that once gripped them starts shedding them, and no amount of abrasion resistance helps.

The trade is honest: metal picks up visible marks that fabric would hide, and it is cold in winter. The short version
Buy ballistic nylon when the item will be dragged, scuffed and loaded, and when you can accept the weight. That means duffels, travel backpacks and hard-use luggage.
Do not pay for it on items that never see abrasion, do not assume it is waterproof, and do not assume the highest denier is automatically the best choice. And for anything that holds cards at a fixed dimension, look at rigid materials instead. Different problem, different answer.
