A light shell over a knit does more work than one heavy coat, and it packs smaller. Start with a breathable base, add a mid-layer you can push up your sleeves, and keep the outer layer thin enough to stuff into a bag.
The trick is picking pieces that look deliberate on their own, so peeling one off does not leave you looking half-dressed.
